Death Game Manhwa Explained: What Counts and Where to Start

Squid Game made the term famous, but manhwa splits it two ways: a locked room with a host, or a whole world turned into the board.

VerdictStart with Escape Room for the locked-room version and The 100th Regression of the Max-Level Player for the system version; skip Death's Game if you came for a game at all.

A death game manhwa locks a group of people inside a game where losing means dying, and someone else writes the rules. In manhwa it comes in two shapes: a closed room with a host, like Escape Room, or a whole world turned into the board by gods or a system, like Return to Player.

Five manhwa covers side by side on a black background: Escape Room, Zero Game, Money Game, Attention Residents and Return to Player

That split matters more than any ranking. If you want Squid Game's tension, you want the first kind. If you want leveling, regression and a long climb, you want the second.

Heads-up on Tapas: it shuts down on March 31, 2027, and episodes you unlocked there go with it. The 100th Regression of the Max-Level Player and The Tutorial Is Too Tough! have no other English home listed yet, and no move has been announced. (What the shutdown means)

What counts as death game manhwa

Three things, all at once: a fixed group of players, rules set by someone outside the group, and death as the price of losing. Take away any one and you get a neighboring genre.

Survival manhwa keep the danger but drop the rulebook. Monsters or a disaster threaten everyone, and nobody is scoring the game. Our best survival manhwa list covers that side, from Sweet Home to Omniscient Reader.

Death's Game is the famous false friend. Search the term and it's often what comes up, but there's no game to beat: Death punishes Yijae Choi by making him die over and over in other people's lives. It's a drama about regret, and a good one, but no rival players and no rules.

Locked-room death game manhwa: the Squid Game kind

These are the closest to what most people mean. A small cast, one space, a host who explains the rules, and players who have every reason to turn on each other.

Escape Room

Escape Room cover art: a dark-haired man in a black suit and tie smiling at the viewer, a second figure behind him, under the orange Korean title 방탈출 Escape Room cover (via AniList).

Sean wakes up after a night of heavy drinking inside an escape room, and the only way out is to survive "sadistic games of life and death" with strangers. The hook is the lead: he's described as overly rational, close to sociopathic, which makes him good at puzzles and bad at teams.

The call: the cleanest entry point. It's finished at 136 chapters, extras included, and the premise is the genre with nothing added: one room, strangers, lethal puzzles. Fact line: completed, by 10PARK, on WEBTOON. Caveat: AniList tags it for gore, so expect blood.

Attention Residents

Attention Residents cover art: a man in a white shirt splashed with blood beside a figure in a red motorcycle helmet, with apartment hallways behind them Attention Residents cover (via AniList).

Seonghan moves into a cheap rental and gets dragged into "an elaborate game of death hosted by his neighbor." WEBTOON's own pitch is blunt: "You are here to play, and the only way out is death."

The call: the short one. It ends in under sixty chapters, so it's the pick for a weekend. Fact line: completed on WEBTOON, story by Su-Ha, art by Bolkeuop. Caveat: WEBTOON files it under horror, so it's the darkest in tone of the locked-room picks.

Money Game and Pie Game

Money Game cover art: a plain white book-style cover with the black title 머니게임 MONEY GAME and a ticket stub along the bottom Money Game cover (via AniList).

Bae Jin-su's two reality-show games. In Money Game, eight people share a 44.8 billion won pot for 100 days, and every item they buy costs a thousand times its real price, paid out of that pot. Pie Game flips it: seven players, 24 hours at a time, and "when blood flows, their time grows."

Pie Game's rule says the quiet part out loud: blood buys time. The danger comes from the other players, not from a host with a gun. WEBTOON lists both as "the original story behind The 8 Show on Netflix," so this is where the drama came from.

The call: the smartest premise on this list. Read Money Game first, then Pie Game. Fact line: both completed on WEBTOON, both short. Caveat: if you need a monster or a body count, the slow money math may test you.

Zero Game

Zero Game cover art: a dark-haired man holding a blonde woman with yellow eyes, both wrapped in chains, over the red Korean title 제로게임 Zero Game cover (via AniList).

After her parents die, Hanna Yoo gets an email inviting her into Zero Game, "where losing means death," and winning lets you reset your whole life. It's a death game with a reward big enough to make players lie.

The call: for readers who want a long ride and a mystery under the game; her dead father is tied to it. Fact line: the Korean run finished in June 2025 at 440 chapters, and WEBTOON's English edition still updates every Tuesday. Caveat: that length is a commitment, and the English side isn't done yet.

System death game manhwa: the whole world is the board

Here the host is a god or a game interface, and the arena is a tutorial world or the planet. These lean into stats and regression, so they sit next to our best game manhwa picks.

The 100th Regression of the Max-Level Player

The 100th Regression of the Max-Level Player cover art: several young men with swords under red ink splashes and the Korean title The 100th Regression of the Max-Level Player cover (via AniList).

The purest death game premise in the system style. The world is pulled into "a death game involving individuals from ages 15 to 29." On his 99th run, Min Ryu finally reaches the final boss, and the system kills him for not bringing four more players. Run 100 is his last.

The call: the best start if you want leveling with real death-game rules. The rule that killed him is a team rule, so the story turns on finding people he can trust. Fact line: 82 episodes on Tapas, paused since Season 2 ended (hiatus notice of June 6, 2026); Season 3 is promised but has no date. Caveat: no ending yet, and no return date.

The Tutorial Is Too Tough!

The Tutorial Is Too Tough! cover art: a grinning young man in a black and gold jacket with lightning crackling around his metal gauntlet The Tutorial Is Too Tough! cover (via AniList).

Ex-pro gamer Lee Hojae is invited to the Tutorial World, picks "hell" difficulty out of confidence, and learns he's trapped there with a 0.01% survival rate. It's a death game run as a tutorial nobody can quit.

The call: the one for readers who like a lead who chose this. Our Tutorial Is Too Tough review goes deeper. Fact line: on Tapas, which paused the English edition on September 29, 2026 for a review of its localization schedule, with no return date. Caveat: long, and stalled in English.

Return to Player

Return to Player cover art: a dark-haired young man holding a bloodied knife against a dark blue background, a figure in a coat behind him Return to Player cover (via AniList).

Gods turn everyone on Earth into players of a game that forces them "to kill monsters in real life -- or be killed themselves." Sehan Kim watched everyone else die, then gets a second playthrough.

The call: the finished pick in this style, and it ended this year at 250 chapters. Fact line: completed on WEBTOON. Caveat: the threat in the premise is monsters, not rival players, so it sits halfway into survival.

Readers draw the line in different places

Even on Reddit, the label stretches. One reader asking for survival game recs wanted more "like tomodachi game, reaper of the drifting moon (not exactly a game but they had to kill each other to survive in the start) and the 100th regression of the max level player." A reply suggesting Surviving the Game as a Barbarian added the honest disclaimer: "not death game but survival is hard in this."

That's the useful test. If the danger comes from the rules and the other players, it's a death game. If it comes from monsters, it's survival.

Our Take

Start with Escape Room. It's finished, it's the genre with nothing extra, and you'll know within a few chapters if you like this kind of story. Then pick your branch: Money Game if the social cruelty was the best part, The 100th Regression of the Max-Level Player if you wanted it bigger and with levels.

Skip the long ones until you know you love the genre. Zero Game is long and still running in English, and The Tutorial Is Too Tough! is long and paused, so neither is where you test the water.

FAQ

What is a death game manhwa?

A manhwa where a group is forced into a game with set rules and losing means dying. A host, a god or a system runs it, and the players can't simply walk away.

Is Death's Game a death game manhwa?

Not in the genre sense. Death makes Yijae Choi die again and again in other people's lives as a punishment; there are no rival players and no rulebook to beat.

Which death game manhwa inspired a Netflix show?

Money Game and Pie Game by Bae Jin-su. WEBTOON lists both as the original story behind The 8 Show on Netflix.

How we checked this: on October 22, 2026 we checked each series' official WEBTOON or Tapas page for its synopsis, status and update day, confirmed chapter counts and creators on AniList, and read the r/manhwa thread quoted above. On October 24 we rechecked both Tapas pages, which carry hiatus notices. Last reviewed: October 24, 2026.
